EARDLEY BROOKE

EARDLEY BROOKE’S OFFICES AT 9 HIGH STREET DURING THE 1920’s

Mr Eardley Brooke established his business as a ‘House and Estate Agent’ in 1905. He took over 4 ‘Seaside Terrace’ in the lower High Street during 1913 from William Rickard, a local ironmonger. Mr Rickard had been trading here since this row of four shops had been built in 1908/09. The Estate Agency was later re-numbered as 9 High Street. After the death of Eardley Brooke in 1919 the business remained in his family for another sixty years until Harold Brooke’s retirement in 1983. During the 1920’s the firm were not only house and insurance agents, but auctioneers and surveyors, together with taking bookings for the Theatre Royal in Bournemouth and acting as local representatives for the Dorset Electric Light Company.
